Treasures from Africa and Oceania – Tribal Art from Remarkable Private Collections
The current auction features a fine selection of tribal art from Africa and Oceania, drawn from various private collections in the Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe.
A European private collection includes remarkable drums, headrests and three Kiribati daggers, among them an exceptionally fine example from the former collection of Pierre Dartevelle, Brussels (lot 5637).
Various objects from Papua New Guinea and the Asmat region come from a Dutch family collection of tribal art, assembled over two generations between the 1950s and 1980s. A particularly noteworthy piece is an old and rare Kanak half-figure (lot 5603). Its provenance is recorded in the catalogue as: Dutch family collection built over two generations between the 1950s and 1980s.
In addition, several remarkable objects from private consignors are offered, including a classic Korwar figure (lot 5631), a Hudoq mask dating to around 1900 (lot 5627), and a fine shield from New Britain, from the collection of a passionate artist and collector of tribal art.
Finally, an overview photograph gives an impression of the diversity of the other tribal art objects, drawn from various private collections in the Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe.
