A Lifetime of Collecting: An Important Dutch Archaeological Collection
This remarkable private Dutch archaeological collection was assembled over several decades by a passionate collector with a broad interest in the classical world. The collection encompasses Egyptian, Roman and Greek art, as well as works from the ancient Near East.
The collector regularly visited Dutch art fairs and special exhibitions organised by antiquities dealers. She also made acquisitions through online exhibitions and auctions in the Netherlands and abroad, acquiring some of her finest pieces from major international auction houses. She further deepened her knowledge by attending archaeology courses at Leiden University, maintaining contact with curators at the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden, and pursuing extensive independent research.
This passion and dedication resulted in a collection with a strong emphasis on Egyptian art. Highlights range from classical faience amulets, such as the charming lapis lazuli frog (lot 4690), to important objects including the golden winged Isis (lot 4920), a large glass eye amulet (lot 4678), a fine ushabti (lot 4913), a mummy cartonnage panel (lot 4707), and a fragment of a black marble sarcophagus (lot 4921).
Roman art is also richly represented in the collection. Highlights include fine examples of Roman glass, among them a small aubergine-coloured Janus vessel (lot 4740), several bronze sculptures, including a fine figure of Jupiter (lot 4750), a rare silver sculpture of Mercury (lot 4898), and two bronze chariot fittings adorned with eagle heads (lot 4900). The Greek collection includes a large classical krater (lot 4902) and a remarkable Corinthian alabastron decorated with a large winged lion.
Alongside works of art, the collector also acquired jewellery, dress pins, amulets and beaded necklaces from various cultures, including a pair of gold earrings from the Eastern Roman Empire (lot 4760).
This collection can rightly be described as important: a personal, deeply researched and diverse assemblage that reflects the richness of the classical world in all its breadth. What began as a shared passion with curators and dealers grew into a small museum-quality archaeological collection. Now, these remarkable objects are returning to the market, ready to find their way into new collections and the hands of a new generation of passionate collectors.
