Classical and early modern paintings, drawings and prints
One of the finest paintings in this auction is the canvas depicting two playing Saint Bernard puppies by Otto Eerelman. This artist became known for his realistic and sensitive paintings of Saint Bernard dogs. He accurately captured the character and strength of the animal, which earned him considerable acclaim. The breed was very popular at the time, both with the public and the royal family. His work was widely distributed through prints and reproductions, ensuring its widespread recognition (6445).
In this auction, we offer a large number of graphic works from the 16th to the early 20th century, drawn from several private collections. These include both Dutch graphic works (lot numbers 6003 and 6012) and those from other countries, including a rare etching by Paul Gauguin (6529).
Another rare work is the large canvas by Johan Thorn Prikker, which the current owner’s family purchased from HP Bremmer. Thorn Prikker was active as a painter, graphic designer, furniture designer, glass artist, and teacher. He was an important representative of Art Nouveau and later of Expressionist and Symbolist art in the Netherlands (6501).
A painting with equally significant provenance is the canvas by Raoul Hynckes, which was once purchased at Kunstzaal van Lier. This art gallery was one of the first galleries in the Netherlands to exhibit modern, experimental art, providing a platform for innovative artists. The gallery played a key role in introducing Symbolism, Art Nouveau, and international influences to the Dutch art world, thus contributing to the breakthrough of modern art in the Netherlands (6480).
