A life of refined collecting: a worldly collection under the hammer
Assembled over the past 45 years, Veilinggebouw De Zwaan will present this year the “Schouten Collection,” compiled by Mr. Adrianus Schouten.
Over this period, having lived and worked across several continents as a Sports Medicine Rehabilitation Specialist, and now since the end of December 2024 permanently settled again in the Bollenstreek, he looks back on a lifetime of active collecting.
With a preference for Chinese and Japanese porcelain, in which various styles and periods come together, the collection also includes finely engraved 18th-century occasion glasses, as well as European porcelain, including early Meissen, which was also actively collected.
Some of the highlights include a large famille rose charger (18th century) with a magnificent peacock decoration, as well as two exceptionally fine blue and white Chongzhen Transitional bottle vases (1611–1644), decorated with figures of high-ranking dignitaries.
Later this year, Veilinggebouw De Zwaan will also offer the carefully assembled Schouten Collection of Old Master paintings, likewise brought together with great care and passion during the same period, in consultation at the time with Drs. Willem-Jan Hoogsteder and his late father John Hoogsteder, as well as the late Rembrandt specialist Theo Laurentius.
