A Rare 'Groninger' Cup from the Dutch Golden Age
A characterful silver beaker from 17th-century Groningen, crafted by the renowned silversmith Hindrik van Laer (1615–1666). The hammered, chalice-shaped cup rests on a characteristic, richly decorated Groningen foot, featuring a cast, domed foot ring adorned with charming cherub heads, a repoussé ornamental band and a striking spiked rim.
The cup is finely engraved with three medallions depicting figures and bearing the initials EC and FE, presumably referring to the original owners. Between them are three different birds perched on elegant fruit-bearing branches. The piece as a whole reflects the refined taste and exceptional craftsmanship of Groningen silver in the first half of the 17th century. Bearing the maker’s mark of Hindrik van Laer, Groningen, 1637/38.
The beaker is in good condition, apart from a few small dents and a repair to the spiked rim.
A remarkable object for collectors of early Dutch silver and an elegant testament to Groningen’s rich tradition of urban silversmithing.
