Romance of the Western Chamber

The play Romance of the Western Chamber is a popular Chinese love story. In depictions on porcelain, paintings, or prints, a recognizable moment from this story is often illustrated.

Typically shown is an encounter between the young scholar Zhang Sheng and Cui Yingying, often set in a garden or by a pavilion. The scene emphasizes distance and longing: the figures face one another or are separated by architectural elements, trees, or balustrades. This reflects the central theme of the story—a forbidden love that develops in secret.

In our spring auction, we are offering no fewer than three lot numbers featuring this theme: 2970, 3044, and 3053.
