Van Hongaarse adel: van de achterkleinkinderen van Inámi Bolgár Ferenc

Inámi Bolgár Ferenc (3 January 1851 – 23 May 1923) was a prominent Hungarian politician, journalist, and member of parliament of noble descent; the addition ‘Inámi’ indicates noble or landowning descent.

Ferenc began his career in the army and later worked as editor-in-chief and owner of several newspapers and magazines. His articles appeared in many Hungarian publications.

He was also active in various political movements: from the moderate opposition and liberals to the Constitutional Party and later as an independent member of parliament. He held important positions, including First Deputy Speaker, or “speaker of the house,” of the Hungarian Chamber of Deputies (1905–1906), and later as State Secretary for Defense (1906–1910). Ferenc belonged to the high political class that had direct contacts with both the Hungarian Prime Minister and the crown of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Franz Josef.

With his wife Irèn Brettner, he had three children, including daughter Lilly Bun von Hidegvölgy – Bolgar (1895-1962). Lilly had one daughter, Ginny Kranenburg – Bun von Hidegvölgy, mother of the submitter.

The jewelry and silverware offer a glimpse into the opulence of this influential Hungarian family. Some pieces were brought back during Ginny’s flight from Budapest before the arrival of the Russians in 1945, while others arrived in the years that followed. For example, her mother, Lilly, who fled Hungary in 1956, took with her the silver enameled powder box (lot number 104).

All the jewelry is exquisitely detailed and set with high-quality gemstones, including natural pearls. The French silver brooch (lot number 6) is particularly striking. It has a very rich appearance, but upon closer inspection, you’ll see that all the stones are imitations. High-quality costume jewelry! The silver trays and cutlery (lot number 723) bear, among other things, the monogram of Bolgar Ferenc, literally crowned with an engraved crown.

All jewelry and silverware are found under the provenance “Of Hungarian nobility: from the great-grandchildren of Inámi Bolgár Ferenc”
